The email address for writing a letter to NewsWeek is: letters@newsweek.com.

If the darkest hour is just before the dawn, then the dawn must be just around the corner. The fur industry is pushing their ill-gotten product down our throats. Pictures of models unabashedly draped?in?fur are in every major newspaper and magazine. Millions of animals suffer and die as the industry watches the money come in.

Here are some excerpts from the latest pro-fur salvo, in the latest issue (Oct 11, 2004) of Newsweek.

"Pietra Jones caressed a spiky, oval-shaped hat made from fox, dyed lilac and purple. 'I love fur!' purred Jones."

"'People have decided to make up their own minds,' says Keith Karlan of the Fur Information Council of America."

"Since 1999, sales have climed steadily, reaching a record $1.8 billion in 2003, and are expected to be even higher this year. Much of that revenue will come not from high-end couture, but from ower-priced accessories, like BCBG's $178 rabbit fur poncho..."

Lt's not beat around the bush. The production of fur is worse than despicable, worse than heinous. It's pure, unadulterated evil. It's a crime against nature. If you're a believer, it is?a crime against Creation. And what's worse, the offenders lie about it, and try to glamorize their evil empire.

It must stop. They must be stopped. There is only one way to do it. By YOU - reading this email - to take action. Not me, not your friends, not PETA, not Stella McCartney, not a celebrity. You.

If you've hesitated writing letters to the editor in the past, now is the time to go to this link and speak on behalf of the animals. Let Newsweek know the truth.

If writing letters is not your style, you can write two sentences. If it bothers you to think about this issue, just think how small your sacrifice is compared to the animals that have to live it.?If you're not sure what to say, just tell them fur is disgusting and barbaric.

We need everyone on board. The House Rabbit Society. Rabbit Rescuers. Wildlife rehabilitators. Anyone who's ever had?a companion animal and stroked its fur.?You! If each person reading this message writes one email a month, that could be the difference between the fur industry expanding or diminishing. You have the power to hugely reduce suffering.

Short letters tend to be better received than long ones. But speak your mind. Everyone who cares about animals and is sickened by their enslavement to the fur industry needs to take action. That is the ONLY way to take on this industry. They have enormous momentum right now. But remember, the bigger they are, the harder they fall.

Please, tell your friends and family. Most people do not realize how badly animals suffer when they're confined in fur farms or trapped and BRUTALLY killed. For fashion. For "glamour."

Please pass this email, or an email in your own words, around the Internet, the country, the world, so that - finally - animal?lovers who have been on the sidelines will?join in and speak for those who desperately need a voice.

Oh, yes. The subtitle of the article is "It's less expensive and more popular than ever. But as young people snuggle up, where are the protesters?" Precisely.

In 1996 Nordstrom's gave animal activists cause for celebration when it promised to phase out the sale of all fur and fur-trimmed garments. To the dismay of activists and anyone concerned with compassion over fashion, Nordstrom not only reneged on the promised to stop selling fur, they now carry more fur than at any time in over a decade.

Please contact Nordstrom's and let them know that as long as they profit from the misery of animals - you will not shop there! Tell your friends and family, too.

You can help. Please let Nordstrom's know that there is nothing fashionable about cruelty to animals and that you will boycott their stores/catalogs until they adopt a fur-free policy. You may want to point out these facts about the fur industry:

  • Animals caught in traps or snares may suffer for several days before dying of exposure, exhaustion, strangulation, or predation.
  • Traps also frequently catch non-target animals including endangered species and companion cats and dogs.
  • Farm-raised fur comes from animals kept in tiny, filthy cages.
  • Animals on fur farms are killed by neck snapping, anal electrocution, and crude, ineffective "gas chambers" that prolong the death of animals and even allow animals to regain consciousness while being skinned.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) ? Oscar-winning South African star Charlize Theron is making fur fly in Hollywood by joining a campaign against the use of animal pelts in fashion.

The 29-year-old star, who picked up the best actress Oscar earlier this year for her role as a serial killer in "Monster," will soon star in a billboard advertisement slamming the animal cruelty caused by the fur industry.

"If You Wouldn't Wear Your Dog, Please Don't Wear Any Fur," reads the billboard that is plastered over a ......

Fashion: Faking It With Fall Fur
By Emily Flynn

Fur may be big in the United States and on the catwalks, but Europe's animal-rights activists aren't having any of it. Fake fur? That's another story. Recent innovations in petrochemicals have made acrylics softer than ever, allowing them to stand up to one of the most basic tests of a pelt's authenticity: touch. Fake fur is also lighter, more durable and more practical than the real thing--and much of it is washable. Lovely new lines of synthetic sable and mink feel so soft, "it's like petting ......

At least two horses died in the making of the new movie "Flicka," a remake of the 1940s classic "My Friend Flicka," but which apparently glorifies rodeos. Please boycott it and tell others about it. It opened October 20.

The American Humane Association (providers of the "No animals were harmed..." certification) is paid by the movie studios and, according to the Web site below, did nothing to prevent or stop the dangerous scenes that led to the horses' deaths, excusing them simply by saying they were "accidents."

The dangerous scenes could have been avoided using special effects, but that would have cost the producers more money. The compassionate crew person who blew the whistle on this tragedy was immediately fired. The links below tell all about it.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) recently launched a Web site dedicated to its factory farming campaign. Within this site is a page devoted to rabbits.

The site reminds us of two important steps we can take to improve the lives of rabbits who are being exploited by the meat industry:

  1. This Easter and every day, make a choice for compassion, and leave rabbit off your plates.
  2. If rabbit is served at restaurants you visit, ask the manager to consider taking this inhumane choice off the menu.
